The word "Yoga" is well known throughout the world today, yet few people really understand the history, the benefits and the techniques of yoga and how much this system can offer to humanity. To help us understand yoga, we may start with the definition of yoga as "yoke" or union. Union with the inner fulfilment, union with the supreme harmony, union with the higher realms, union in love with our eternal common origin - the guardian of our soul.
This goal of yoga should be understood by persons at the outset to guide their development gradually from the beginning of spiritual awareness to the highest levels of consciousness. We have to determine what exactly is impeding our access to the dimensions of eternal existence, full knowledge and inner fulfilment.
This is a spiritual question, which can be answered through proper Yoga practices. If we approach the practice of Yoga only with the hope of improving our physical condition we will miss out the real potential given to the world by the great teachers of this transcendental science. Meditation helps us to remove fear and pressure and stimulates self-control, simplicity and clear thinking.
The changes achieved with yoga are natural results and stay with us during our lifetime. The practical exercises remove the stress, which comes from the lack of harmony in the modern life and leads to loss of brightness. We are always tending to blame external factors about our difficulties but yoga shows us that most of the problems could be solved through self-control.
